What do you need?

I've been asked what type of gear do you need to be prepared for hiking in Yorkshire. It's not too complicated, but here is my short list:
A good mapping app:
Two apps I recommend for mapping:
or
Ordnance Survey | Great Britain's national mapping service (May have a fee)
These two apps will show you the trails and provide real time tracking/mapping. I've used both and currently prefer Strava, but they are very similar
Waterproof gear:
For Yorkshire, water resistant doesn't cut it. You need a good quality waterproof jacket. I'm wearing a version I got at Brass Pro in Denver. When I first got here, I had a "rain jacket" from Eddie Bauer that didn't cut it - I wound up getting soaked one day walking around town.

Shoes / Boots:
I wound up buying these shoes locally. I think they are Italian. They are waterproof and really comfortable. I searched around Yorkshire and wound up buying locally at the outdoor store in Pateley Bridge. They had a great selection, competitive price, and the owner / shopkeeper knew his stock and which shoes met my needs (Waterproof, good sole, sturdy).

Walking sticks
The last item is the newest addition to my walking gear. I added these about a month ago, after reading about a good friend who fell while hiking solo and really messing up her ankle. These aren't a guarantee to prevent injury, but in the wet sloppy mud/uneven terrain of the dales, these sticks have helped quite a bit over the last month

Now that you have all the gear - Get out there and do a hike!
